Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions answered. Here’s what you need to know about our Full Service water sampling.

Regular testing is your first line of defence against unseen hazards (you can’t even taste). PEI offers free microbial (total coliform & E. coli) and general chemistry (pH, hardness, nitrate, most ions) testing for private well owners which is a great way to encourage testing (note: some metals and water quality indicators are excluded). Even a basic screen is infinitely better than none!

With WellSpring’s professional expertise and services, you’ll:

  • Reduce costly retests by targeting the right parameters from the start.

  • Pinpoint hidden threats – heavy metals, pesticides, VOCs, PFAS (coming soon) before they have major impacts on your families health.

  • Help avoid thousands in unnecessary expenses and installing the wrong water-treatment systems. By getting certified testing and science-backed recommendations we can help you confirm your water is treated for the right concerns.

Don’t gamble on your water quality – even if you don’t choose WellSpring we encourage you to utilize PEI’s free testing programs and check out our Consultation services for more options.

Understanding your testing requirements is an important part of our water risk review and reporting.

Depending on your testing history and risk area, recommendations may vary but in general for private well owners PEI /Canada recommendations align with the below:

Micro/Bacteria (Total Coliform & E.Coli) –  every year.  Semi-annually is recommended in higher-risk areas/periods (spring thaw, after dry-spells, or flooding etc.).

General Chemistry & Heavy Metals – Include in Baseline Testing, if there are no concerns adjust to every 2-3 years.

Specialized Tests:

Pesticides/Herbicides – if you live near agricultural land or use pesticides, annually is recommended; 2-3 years thereafter.

VOCs/Petroleum Products – homes near industrial sites, gas stations, former landfills or who had former fuel tanks or fuel spills. Sample to get your baseline, if no issues adjust to 3-5 years.

It is also recommended to Evaluate & Test:

  • Before using a new or repaired well.

  • After flooding, land disturbance, or septic failure.

  • If you notice changes in taste, odor, or color, or health symptoms in your household.

  • When vulnerable people (infants, immunocompromised, pregnant & nursing) move in.

  • Before using if you overwinter your home/cottage.

Check our our resources page or send us an email if you have any questions or would like select sampling (such as Pesticides only)!

Our process starts with a sample collection from your source (most commonly Kitchen Sink) and a risk review/ visual walk around & history of your property (well location, plumbing piping material etc.) to help you understand your testing results and prevent drinking water concerns.

We drop off and/or ship collected samples to the lab for certified testing. Once lab data is reviewed we personalize your properties results, and recommendations and  issue your final digital report via email with a link to book your call to review (phone or online via Google Meet).

Our lab testing is done partially on island and through a third party lab off Island, as the detailed and special testing we offer are not available on PEI.

The lab has set prices ($200-300 for each contaminant group) and we add a professional fee on top to cover our reporting, travel, insurance  and business expenses. One of our goals is to make these tests more accessible to homeowners – when we can access savings we will pass those wins on to you through lower pricing and offerings.

If your water results show drinking water guideline exceedances or concerns our reports will outline each and include recommendations for how you can address them.

Total Coliform/E. Coli samples are usually received within 2 days of drop off. If Bacteria is detected we notify you within 24hrs of any reported exceedances (full report is only issued upon all data being received by the lab). All other testing requires 10-15 business days in the lab once the lab confirms receipt and processing and then reports are issued within 2-3 business days thereafter.

If you have a high priority or tight timelines please reach out to us before hand so we can try to accommodate.
